These humble wooden chalets were originally used by shepherds to shelter and watch over their animals during the summer months when they grazed on the alpine grass. Nowadays, when people visit the Swiss Alps for skiing vacations, they often choose to stay in these cozy chalets.
4. Turf Houses, Iceland
These special houses have a wooden frame filled with bricks made of grass and dirt. They were built this way because the areas where they are commonly found, like Iceland, Norway, Scotland, and Greenland, didn’t have many other building resources available. The first turf houses were constructed in the 800s and are still widely used in Iceland today.
